If you are a friend of Silky Terriers, you have come to the right place!
The goals of the Silky Terrier Club of Central Florida are to:
- Preserve the Silky Terrier by being a tight-knit group of breeders, exhibitors and dog lovers who are determined to keep Silkys being Silkys.
- Protect the Silky Terrier by ensuring that we are allowed to continue to produce great dogs that look and act like the breed. To do this, we are vocal in support of groups like the NAIA, OFA, our national club STCA, and the AKC’s CHF. Members are also active in Rescue and many volunteer with their local Animal Services.
- Promote the Silky Terrier through well-run conformation Specialties, Health Clinics, projects such as our Silky Terrier Playing Cards and a yearly Silky Terrier Calendar, a fact-filled bi-monthly newsletter, a yearly BEST Silky Contest, a Dog of the Year Contest and active participation on our FB Group, Friends of the Silky Terrier Club of Central Florida.
We are saddened that fewer and fewer people are choosing to be owned by a Silky Terrier, per American Kennel Club Statistics. While acknowledging that the Silky is not a breed for everyone (we don’t call them Mischievous Miscreants for nothing), we worry that someday the breed could go extinct. The goal of the Silky Terrier Club of Central Florida is to reverse this trend.

Why a Silky?

What a Silky Owner Says About Her Dog
“Kinji has such a silly but yet sweet personality. He can go from a scale of 0-100 in seconds then back to zero again. He loves to play but can be also the sweetest little pup.
He has truly made our life so much better; we wake up excited every day to see him and to see what today brings. He makes so many people smile and laugh with his charm and antics.
He has brought so much joy even to people he doesn’t really know; he goes once a week to Connie’s work (she works with mentally disabled folks) and he can sense their needs and he’s on his best behavior, he takes himself to each one of their rooms just to say hi and to love on them, and even the ones who don’t communicate with anyone smile from ear to ear and look forward to him coming to them.
When we met the breeder Karen to pick out a pup he picked us; I knew from the very first look he was ours’. We never knew what we were missing until we got Kinji.
It’s hard to say he’s the best because so many people have such great dogs. But after having dogs all our lives this little guy is one in a million. I truly couldn’t imagine life without him, and I wouldn’t trade him for anything this world has to offer. There will never be another Sir Kinji (Dragonslayer).”

This club was founded in 2006 under the auspices of the American Kennel Club. While our official region is Central Florida, we reach far beyond with fundraisers, contests, a robust Breeder Referral service, support of worthy causes and educational outreach. We have put on two Specialties a year since 2010.

What More Silky Owners Say About Their Dogs
“Abba comes from a long line of Great Protectors. She protects us from intruder cats, neighborhood dogs (safely enclosed in their own yards, or on the tv), birds who want to taunt her from our bushes and the squirrels doing their own dance in our trees.
She pranced into her place in our household this year although you can argue she fit into her role with us like an ‘old soul’.
I say that people are her favorite thing. She would love nothing more than to invite the neighborhood children into her yard to come play with her! “
“Previously, for 30+ years, I have always owned German Shepherds, so this little new dog breed was quite different from my past experience as a dog owner.
Destiny was a wonderful companion, watchdog, and friend. This little sized dog was full of courage and love!
We loved her temperament, she was a joy at home and an easy traveler. No matter where we traveled, people always complimented how well behaved and well-mannered she was. She never met a stranger that she did not warm up to quickly.
Destiny had a great sense of humor. We played hide and seek a lot; I would hide in the closet, I would leave the closet door opened, and watch her walk back and forth ‘seeking’ me. For years, I always hid in the same place, and she always ‘sought after me’ as if it was the first time looking for me. She would pace back and forth about the width of the doorway, until I was giggling so loud, she ‘pretended’ she found me.
On the days I worked, she would greet me with spins and gleeful dancing as I walked in the door. She certainly knew how to entertain me and give more love than any human deserves !!
My sweet Destiny lived until 22 days before her 16th birthday. In her life, she was almost always healthy. It wasn’t until her last few months of life, after she was diagnosed with cancer, that she had health issues. I would highly recommend this breed to a retiree, or a family who is looking to be loved, and has a heart to love back.”
“Orsetto is our third Silky Terrier. He is a year and a half old. Like his predicessors, Piccola and Lupo, he is perpetually happy, mischievous, curious (AKA nosey).
He loves to play with humans and hasn’t found a dog he doesn’t like and thinks he is the same size of them all — whether another terrier or a full grown Rottweiler.
He also has no problem entertaining himself with the myriad of toys in his toy basket. As energetic as he can be, he is also the perfect lap dog and loves his snuggle time.”
“Geordie has had an impressive year! At 19 months of age, he began trialing in agility in late May, and by the beginning of November had successfully moved up through the levels to be trialing at the Masters level in AAC (Agility Association of Canada) in all categories (Standard, Jumpers, Gamble and Snooker).
In just 5 trials, he earned 30 qualifying runs, off to a great start in his agility career. He was also Novice High in Trial at our local NADAC summer trial.
In his quieter moments at home, he worked on his Trick Dog titles with Do More With Your Dog. He earned Masters titles at all levels, and his Trick Dog Championship this fall.
Intelligent, eager to learn, and enthusiastic in all he turns his paw to, Geordie (Carmorosa’s Walk’n in the Highlands) is becoming a great little performance dog and a wonderful teammate.”
